A drain field, sometimes called a leach field, is the final stage of your septic system. It’s a network of perforated pipes buried in shallow trenches filled with gravel and soil, usually located somewhere in your yard away from the house.

After your septic tank separates solids from wastewater, the liquid — called effluent — flows out into those pipes. From there, it slowly seeps through the gravel and into the soil below. That process is what makes a septic system work. Without a functioning drain field, your system has nowhere to send the wastewater after it leaves the tank.

How Does a Drain Field Work?

After wastewater leaves your septic tank, it runs into the drain field through several perforated pipes buried in the soil. The wastewater slowly filters through gravel and soil layers, removing harmful bacteria and contaminants before it reaches the groundwater below.

How does a drain field work when it isn’t maintained? When the drain field is overloaded, damaged, or blocked by root intrusion, the filtration process stops working. Wastewater backs up into the tank, saturates the soil, and eventually surfaces in your yard. It can also affect nearby wells and waterways if it isn’t repaired or replaced.
